General Points

  • Double check the date time and place of the interview
  • Ensure that you get there on time
  • Take the company telephone number with you just in case you have a problem
  • If you decide to pull out it is good manners to let the company and your agency know
  • Plan your journey
  • Ensure that mobile phones are turned off during the interview
  • It could be useful to take along a photocopy of your passport or driving licence to prove identity, together with proof of qualifications, and work permit if you are a foreign national
  • Remember that first impressions are important

Research

  • Find out as much information as you can about the company and any group that they may belong to
  • Visit the companies website which is likely to be a fount of information
  • Ask for a copy of the job description.  Companies do not always prepare one but it is always worth asking

The Interview

  • Look the part – dress smartly and formally
  • Give a firm handshake, make good eye contact and smile
  • Sit upright in the chair
  • Speak clearly and confidently
  • Be attentive
  • The interview will usually cover your experience – ensure that you are familiar with your CV – information about the company and the role and an opportunity for you to ask questions
  • Listen carefully to what is being asked
  • Make your answers concise and to the point – do not ramble
  • Remember that the interview is an exploration for company and candidate.  An eventual ‘marriage’ has to be right for both of you
  • Be enthusiastic
