Letter Writing

Letter writing when you are applying for a job is a most important exercise.  It will usually be the first bit of knowledge that a potential employer learns about you.  The following notes may be helpful:-

  • Recruitment is a matching process.  Use the letter to highlight the areas where your experience matches what the employer is specifically looking for.
  • Confine the letter to one A4 sheet.
  • Ensure that it is grammatically correct, properly structured and with no spelling mistakes.
  • Opinion is divided as to whether letters should be handwritten or typed.  Either can be appropriate.  If you choose to hand write letters ensure that it is neat and legible and bear in mind that handwriting can reveal a lot about your personality.
  • Having pointed out areas where your profile matches what the potential employer seeks, it is appropriate to conclude by expressing the hope that you may be granted an interview.

Personalise the letter if at all possible.
